Marvel is back on top!

"Deadpool & Wolverine" broke box office records this weekend, making $205 million in the US during its opening. This is the biggest opening of 2024 and the biggest ever for an R-rated movie.

The movie did better than experts thought. They expected it to make between $160 million and $180 million.

"The huge success of 'Deadpool & Wolverine' shows that we should never underestimate how powerful, attractive, and unpredictable watching movies in theaters can be," said Paul Dergarabedian, a movie industry expert at Comscore.

Outside the US, the movie made $233.3 million. This means it made a total of $438.3 million worldwide for the whole weekend.

"Deadpool & Wolverine" is the 34th movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and the first Disney-made MCU movie to get an R-rating. The first two Deadpool movies, also R-rated, were made by 20th Century Fox. Disney bought Fox in 2019, bringing X-Men and Fantastic Four back to Marvel.

Like other MCU movies, "Deadpool & Wolverine" did well because fans were excited. People wanted to see it early to avoid spoilers. Disney kept most of the movie secret and didn't show it to many reporters before it came out.

The big success of "Deadpool & Wolverine" comes after a tough time for Marvel movies since the pandemic. Disney made too many superhero shows for streaming, and their focus on quantity over quality for movies led to some disappointment.

"Marvel took a short break to improve their creative direction after some divisive big movies, and this return was definitely successful," said Shawn Robbins, who runs Box Office Theory.

"Breaking the record for R-rated movies shows that Marvel and Disney can try new things when needed. It also shows that Marvel fans and regular moviegoers still want the kind of fun and meaningful big movies that have made Marvel so successful," he added.

The opening of "Deadpool & Wolverine" happened at the same time as Marvel's event at San Diego Comic Con. There, they shared their updated movie plans and showed fans where the story will go in the coming years. This includes Sam Wilson, the new Captain America, trying to bring the Avengers back together after they split up following their fight with Thanos. It also includes the arrival of Doctor Doom, who will be played by Robert Downey Jr., who used to play Iron Man.

"We should look at each movie separately, but 'Deadpool & Wolverine' and this weekend's Comic Con announcements are big steps towards getting fans excited about Marvel again," Robbins said.
