On January 10th evening (local time), Meta's CEO Mark Zuckerberg appeared in an interview with comedian and show host Joe Rogan.
The interview covered many different topics, from content moderation and the Trump administration to Apple's clear lack of innovation.
Zuckerberg has long been a strong critic of Apple's App Store policies and privacy protection measures. During the interview, the Meta CEO suggested that Apple's 15-30% fees on the App Store are just a way for the company to hide their declining iPhone sales.
"I feel like Steve Jobs invented the iPhone, and now they've been standing still with it for 20 years," Mark said. He also predicted that iPhone sales would decrease because each new version isn't very different from the last one, so users will take longer to upgrade their phones.
Mark also talked about AirPods and how Apple limits the connection protocol of Meta Ray-Ban glasses with iPhones. "There are many companies in the world that can make really good wireless earphones, but Apple has created a special protocol built into the iPhone that only allows AirPods to connect optimally with this device," Mark explained.
He also pointed out that Apple justifies this by claiming that opening up the protocol would affect user privacy and security. However, Zuckerberg argued that this issue actually stems from Apple's failure to design a secure protocol from the beginning.
The Meta CEO continued by expressing his strong optimism that sooner or later, Apple would be overtaken by competitors because "they have already lost the battle of creating innovative things."
He also shared his concern that one day, Apple might launch a version similar to Meta's Ray-Ban glasses but with the advantage of iPhone integration. In fact, Bloomberg has reported that Apple is working on a model just like Mark described.
The discussion became more intense when Mark highlighted how Apple is trying to make children think they should use iMessage's blue chat bubbles, or else they might face mockery from their friends.
Both Zuckerberg and Rogan then searched on Google to check whether RCS (a modern messaging protocol) is encrypted for iPhone users, as Apple had added it to iOS 18. The answer was no.
The Vision Pro also became a topic of discussion, with Mark stating that this $3,500 headset doesn't match up to Meta's products that cost only $350-400. However, he admitted that versions 2 and 3 would be much better, and acknowledged Vision Pro as one of Apple's innovative initiatives.
Responding to the interview, 9to5Mac pointed out that Meta hasn't really produced any outstanding inventions, as their products like Oculus, WhatsApp, and Instagram were all acquisitions.
As for Apple Vision Pro, Meta immediately started copying it after its launch. The influence of Apple Vision Pro is very clear, even though Zuckerberg claims that Meta Quest is a better product.
