In our Vietnamese, we have a simple philosophy: if you want to know, you need to question; if you want to be good at something, you need to learn. Learning must come together with practice. This is a simple philosophy, so easy to remember. I think it is correct even for nowadays.
We often miss the "practice" part. We only do the "learn" but miss the "practice". It often leads to the final goal or target not being reached.
If you cannot swim, and if you want to swim, you need to learn and practice swimming in a swimming pool, right?
If you cannot drive and want to be able to drive, you need to learn and actually drive - physically driving. I mean you will get in the car, put your hand on the steering wheel, and your leg is put on the the brake pedal, right?. I guess that, because I cannot drive. I don't know how to drive a car.
If you want to be a programmer, you need to learn in school. And then you need to write a program.
When I was in college, I was studying in FPT Aptech HN. Our program exposed at length, the course was allocated into theory and lab. Each theory session came with a lab session. In the lab session, we go to the lab room, turn on the computer, and write code. It is just simply rewriting the code from the theory session and executing it to see the result on the screen. I mean it is simple, easy to do, and easy not to do as well. But if someone misses the lab, only learns theory, then there is a chance that they cannot get a high score on the exam, or only pass the exam with a low score, or the bad situation is that they fail the exam. If we miss the lab, it will be hard to acquire new knowledge or not truly understand the lesson in the theory. If you don't understand, it is easy to forget the knowledge. The consequence, if you fail the exam, you need to pay money to learn again and do the exam again, waste money, waste time.
Reading a book is very good, you will learn new things. But remember that knowledge is useless if you don't apply it to your life. You need to apply what you learn from the book to improve anything in your life. Only then, you are following the right process.
Let's say another example, you want to learn English. Specifically, you want to improve your vocabulary. Then you read books, go to courses, watch videos.... But remember that it is not done yet. You need to practice in order to complete the process. Doing exercises is considered practice because you need to exercise your brain in order to complete your exercises. You need to complete the theory lessons, then complete the homework exercises. And then pass all the exams. Only then, this is the actual learning.
