Today (January 15), a Joint Development Forum with the theme "Global High-Tech Industry Trends and Their Relevance to Vietnam in 2025" was held at Ton Duc Thang University.
The forum attracted participation from leaders of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Ho Chi Minh City, along with representatives from various businesses and experts from both domestic and international sectors. The forum focused on several key topics including: the development of the global semiconductor industry, new trends in chip design and manufacturing, and the impact of semiconductors on other fields such as artificial intelligence, Internet of Things, and automation. The forum also discussed solutions for training and developing high-quality human resources for the semiconductor industry, particularly in Vietnam.
Speaking at the forum, Mr. Vo Xuan Hoai, Deputy Director of the National Innovation Center, shared: "Vietnam is considered a destination for many major global technology corporations in electronics. Additionally, in recent times, the semiconductor industry has seen participation from many large global enterprises. More than 50 companies are involved in chip design, while 10 companies are participating in other areas related to various stages of the semiconductor industry. By 2030, Vietnam expects to have a semiconductor manufacturing plant."
The discussions highlighted Vietnam's growing role in the global semiconductor industry and its potential for future development. The forum served as a platform for sharing knowledge and establishing connections between industry leaders, academics, and policymakers, all working towards strengthening Vietnam's position in the high-tech manufacturing sector.
Regarding Vietnam's position, Mr. Vo Xuan Hoai mentioned that over the past four years, Vietnam has implemented breakthrough policies to keep pace with global development trends. Notably, the country has announced a national program for human resource development in the semiconductor industry until 2030, with a vision extending to 2050. According to this plan, Vietnam aims to train approximately 50,000 engineers in the semiconductor industry by 2030.
According to the Deputy Director of the National Innovation Center, this national program is highly significant, and they look forward to collaborating with universities to develop human resources in the industry.
From the university perspective, Dr. Tran Trong Dao, President of Ton Duc Thang University, expressed his hope that the forum would become an annual event to promote cooperation between Vietnam and the international community in the semiconductor industry. Through this, Vietnam aims to establish itself as a crucial link in the global semiconductor supply chain. In particular, the connections between government agencies, universities, research institutes, companies, corporations, and organizations from Vietnam, Taiwan, and the international community in the semiconductor industry will help enhance the quality of human resources. This collaboration will serve the development of Vietnam's semiconductor industry, fostering growth and innovation in the sector. The strengthened partnerships between various stakeholders will create opportunities for knowledge exchange, technological advancement, and workforce development, ultimately contributing to Vietnam's emergence as a significant player in the global semiconductor landscape.
In 2025, Ton Duc Thang University will begin admitting students for specialized training in semiconductor circuit design engineering, building upon their existing electronics and telecommunications engineering program.
Previously, in September 2024, the Government approved the Semiconductor Industry Human Resource Development Program until 2030, with a vision extending to 2050. The program aims to train at least 50,000 university-level and higher workforce members for the semiconductor industry by 2030. This includes training at least 42,000 engineers and bachelors; at least 7,500 master's students and 500 doctoral researchers; at least 15,000 personnel in design processes, and at least 35,000 personnel in manufacturing, packaging, testing, and other semiconductor industry processes. Additionally, the program will train at least 5,000 professionals with deep expertise in artificial intelligence for the semiconductor industry. Furthermore, specialized semiconductor industry training will be provided to 1,300 Vietnamese lecturers who teach at research institutes, universities, training support facilities, and enterprises.
