FPT's Goal: Building a High-Quality IT Workforce

FPT Corporation, a Vietnamese company, has made great progress in the IT world. They started with no experience in selling software globally. But after 25 years of hard work, they have reached an important milestone. 

For the first time, FPT Vietnam earned more than 1 billion USD from selling IT services to other countries. This success helps make Vietnam a popular place for global technology, and positions Vietnam for software development.

Not many people know about the journey behind FPT Group's success.

The company's story is about always learning and improving to reach world-class standards through workforce development. 

Mrs. Chu Thi Thanh Ha, the leader of FPT Software (FSoft), says, "World-class people create a world-class company." She believes that to become world-class, people must be always be eager to learn and embrace innovation.

FPT Software started with very little knowledge about working with international clients. In their first year, they faced many failures. They quickly realized that to survive and grow in foreign markets, they needed to change their thinking and improve their skills. They had to meet the strict demands of global customers through digital transformation.

The company immediately began training their staff. They focused on improving processes, language skills, and getting international technology certificates. 

The company leaders encouraged all employees to have a strong desire for learning, improving processes, and meeting international standards to enable global expansion.

One of FPT Software's important training programs was the CMM-4 campaign. CMM is a quality certificate from the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) in the United States. 

In 2002, FPT Software became the first company in Southeast Asia to achieve CMM-4. This put them on the list of the world's top 100 companies for quality management. It was like getting a first-class ticket to enter the global software market.

FPT Software also keeps improving its project management by working with top global organizations like the Project Management Institute (PMI). They use the most modern international standards. 

The company also invests in research to understand the latest technology trends in artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing, and automotive technology. In the AI field, FPT Software is one of the founding members of the Global AI Alliance, along with big companies like IBM and Meta. Recently, they worked with Aitomatic and Tokyo Electron (TEL) to create SemiKong. This is the world's first open-source large language model (LLM) made specially for the semiconductor industry.

One of the reasons Infosys became a world-famous IT company, worth over 70 billion dollars is because they believe in learning all the time. 

In 2002, Infosys built a big Global Education Center in Mysore, India. This center is very large, has many teachers, and can train 14,000 people at once in different technology areas.

FPT Software, another company, wants to be like Infosys. They want to become a "billion-dollar, world-class company," as said by the FPT Software Chairwoman, Chu Thi Thanh Ha. 

FPT Software is making many learning programs for all their workers, from new employees to experienced managers. To make their learning culture better, FPT Software hired Mr. Prajith Nair, who used to be the Training Director at Infosys. 

Mr. Nair says that for a company to grow strong, its workers must always be ready to solve customer problems. To do this, each person needs to learn and grow on their own. He thinks that only 20% of training should be about customer needs, and 80% should be about helping workers in their jobs and careers.

FPT Software gives its workers many ways to learn. They can study technical skills, marketing, languages, and more. People can learn online by themselves or in classes. The company also helps pay for workers to learn and get certificates.

Since 2021, FPT Software has worked with Udacity, a famous online learning platform. In 2022, they spent a lot of money to train their workers in new technologies like Data, AI, Cloud, and others. They also started many new learning programs to help their 33,000 workers improve their skills.

Infosys has about 317,000 workers, which is almost 10 times more than FPT Software. Infosys grew because they care a lot about their workers and think people are the most important part of the company. If FPT Software wants to be as big as Infosys, they need to prepare many workers for the future.

FPT Software is working with universities that teach IT. They give money to excellent students who study technology. Recently, they announced they would spend a lot of money to work with 15 universities to train IT workers who can speak Japanese.

Today, India is a powerful technology country because of people like Narayana Murthy, who started Infosys. His dream of building a software company made many people want to become programmers. Recently, Mr. Murthy said that Vietnam is becoming an important place for global technology. He believes that companies like FPT will help Vietnam use its full potential in technology.
