A Story from a Non-Profit

A few years back, I was part of a non-profit organization when the boss quit. Right away, everyone looked at the second-in-command for guidance. They started setting up meals and talks with that person. People liked the old boss and were thankful for his work. But, with one announcement, all his power went to the next person in line.

A Company Sale

I also saw something similar at a company I worked for. The owner called everyone for a meeting.

To our surprise, he said he sold the company, and the new owner walked in.

The old owner left, but the old boss stayed to pack up.

That afternoon, no one really talked to him except to say "Thanks." All questions went to the new owner and boss.

The Number One Way Leaders Lose Their Influence

It's hard, but if you lose trust, you can get it back over time. If you make a mistake, you can say sorry and fix it. If you act badly, you can make up for it and change.

But if you resign your leadership position, if you quit, people will immediately find a new leader to follow. This happens very fast.

So, leaders need to be ready for this when they quit.

When you leave, you might get a nice watch, a party, or maybe they'll name something after you. But don't be fooled – your schedule might suddenly be empty.

People might not ask for your ideas as much. And you team will quickly move on and follow someone else.
