Dell, the US computer company, has just made its second round of job cuts in the past 15 months. This time, the company is letting go of up to 12,500 workers to put more resources into developing artificial intelligence, or AI, products.
According to SiliconAngle, about 12,500 Dell employees will lose their jobs this week. The affected workers are mostly from Dell's sales and marketing teams.
A report from Bloomberg says Dell is changing its sales team structure to focus on AI products.
Ian Armstrong, a former Dell employee who worked in the company's UX design team for eight years, called this round of layoffs a "massacre". With this latest round, Dell has fired 24,500 employees in just 15 months.
As of February this year, Dell had about 120,000 employees, which means this week's layoffs could reduce the company's workforce by about 10%.
Michael Dell, Chairman and CEO of #DellTechnologies, discusses the impact of #AI on the company with @CNBCtelevision. Intel Confirms 15,000 Job Cuts
Dell's large-scale layoffs come less than a week after Intel announced similar news. Last week, Intel confirmed it would cut 15,000 jobs to "adjust its cost structure" and "fundamentally change how it operates". This news came at the same time as Intel's financial results for Q2 2024, when the company's revenue was $12.8 billion, down 1% from the same period last year. In this quarter, the company lost $1.61 billion instead of making a profit of $1.47 billion in Q2 2023. Besides the layoffs expected to be mostly completed by the end of 2024, Intel also announced plans to cut total costs by $10 billion.
